If you are consistently fighting weight loss and you just can’t control your cravings for finger foods and snacks it is a good idea to be pro-active and stock your cabinets and fridge with foods that don’t hurt you. Below is a list of foods that you can keep handy and will help you fill up, not increase your calorie count by much and in some cases compliment your weight loss missions.

     Celery

     Celery

With only 16 calories per 100g of celery, we are not surprised that this vegetable toped our list. Celery is rich in anti-oxidants and it acts as an anti-inflammatory in our body. It also contains sodium, good fat, sugar, protein, potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin A, B-12, C, D, B-6, calcium, magnesium and Iron. Try replacing chips or processed foods with celery. The Key with using celery as a snack is not have it with any dips or sauces.

     Cucumber

A 100g of Cucumber also has 16 calories. The composition of a cucumber is mostly water which makes it a great filler food. You can eat cucumber until you feel full and still not break your calories allowance. Aside from being a great low calorie snack,  Cucumbers also contain an anti-oxidant named quercetin that is helpful for reducing swelling.

     Lemons

Now Lemons will hardly replace the urge to snack, but squeezing a half lemon and having a quick glass of lemon and water can help you fill up and hopefully avoid reaching for chips.  The health benefits of lemons are countless. They are a great alkalizing food that also act as a detoxifier for your body. It can help you keep hydrated and break down the foods in your stomach faster.

     Cauliflower

Cauliflowers have 25 calories per 100g and are a great replacement for the need to snack crunchy. They are also a great anti-inflamatory food and help the body’s digestive and cardiovascular system. It is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants and therefore, is effective in reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration which can lead to blindness, particularly in the elderly. The sulforaphane protects the retinal tissues from damage caused by oxidative stress, prevents vision impairment, and various eye ailments such as cataracts.

We all need to treat ourselves once in a while and it is better to go out and have a nice meal than to revert to finger snacks that are processed and full of sodium.

I recommend Italian Restaurant Ombretta cucina+vino for Toronto and Mississauga Visitors.
