A cavity is permanent damage to the hard surface area of the teeth that result in holes or tiny openings. Cavities are also referred to as tooth decay or caries. A cavity is usually caused by the bacteria in the mouth that acts on sugary foods and drinks taken without cleaning the teeth properly. Tooth decay and cavities are among the most common oral problems, and they affect children, teenagers, and adults. As long as you have teeth, you can have cavities; that is why you should attend a dental clinic regularly for a check-up.

Cavities are a severe problem that can damage deeper layers of the teeth causing severe toothache, tooth loss, and infection. As soon as you notice the symptoms below, go to a dental clinic for an examination, you cannot afford to ignore these signs.

1. Severe, Constant Pain and Toothache

When you feel a severe toothache or pain anytime especially the damaged tooth has contact with something. The pain can be gum below the damaged tooth or the damaged tooth itself. The pain could be sharp or throbbing pain. When the pain is consistent, visit a dental clinic for an assessment.

2. Painful Chewing on Food

If you feel pain anytime you chew on food, and it hurts so bad, you may have cavities already. The nerve in your tooth may be infected and already decaying. Try and touch the painful area to know the severity of the pain. If you feel unbearable pain, see your optometrist in a dental clinic as soon as possible to have your tooth examined.

3. Bad Taste, Bad Breath

When you notice consistent lousy breath from your mouth, or you have bad taste, you are most likely to have a cavity. The tiny holes that developed in your teeth have become a breeding ground for bacteria. The bad breath may be a sign of diseased gum or plaque build-up on the gum or teeth. Go to a nearby dental clinic to examine your teeth for cavities.

4. Oversensitivity to Temperature

It is common for people who have cavities to experience a strange sensitivity to temperature in the infected tooth. You may become extremely sensitive to hot or cold foods and liquids making you feel awkward when eating or drinking. The damage to the hard layer of the tooth exposes the nerve in the tooth to severe temperature changes.

5. Holes in the Tooth

Cavities result from an unusually large number of bacteria in the mouth that end up creating holes in the teeth. When there are visible holes in your teeth, go to a dental clinic for a check-up and treatment.
